LEO RIJ
Leo Rij is an artist from Kraków, Poland, based in Rotterdam. Rij’s practice takes inspiration from Slavic mythology and Polish language, including symbols and sculptures, which he uses to capture the oddities of his surrounding. Rij mostly focuses on painting and drawing, but also works with textile installations, ceramics and video.
In the show ‘Four Ninety Degree Angles’, Rij exhibited the towering sculpture ‘Licho’. Licho is a creature originating from Slavic mythology, where it is believed to be a mischievous being, causing people to lose and break their possessions. But in Rij’s experience, Licho’s presence can also be understood as non-normative; in addition to breaking things, Licho breaks molds and helps overturn societal norms.
